The Government has great sympathy for the refugees and deplores the abuses of human rights in their countries of origin. We have contributed substantially to international relief efforts, and have already accepted some 1400 refugees for settlement. We are urgently considering accepting additional boat refugees from Vietnam.

WILL HONG KONG ALLOW REFUGEES FROM THE SS "HUEY FONG" TO LAND? 5. This is a decision for the Hong Kong Government which has a praiseworthy record for receiving Indo-Chinese refugees. It is an internationally established and equitable principle that ships should normally disembark boat refugees at their first port of call which for the Huey Fong was Taiwan, not Hong Kong.
