STATEMENT BY SECRETARY-GENERAL ON REFUGEE SITUATION IN SOUTH-EAST ASIA
At 1 p.m. on Saturday, 2 December, a United Nations spokesman made the following statement:
The Secretary-General is deeply concerned at the deteriorating situation of the refugees in South-East Asia. This humanitarian tragedy demands the compassion and the practical assistance of the world community.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Retugees has been making all possible efforts to alleviate this appailing situation, and I appreciate the assistance already afforded by a number of Governments. However, in view of the continuing human tragedy which we are witnessing, I feel compelled to appeal to all Governments once again to consider urgently what measures they can take to assist these thousands of helpless people, who are now without hope for the future.
