CHEATER AUSTRALIA-HONG KONG AIR FARES

The Australian and UK Governments today announced the introduction of a new package of lower fares between Australia and Hong Kong. A particular feature is a cheap Advance Purchase Excursion (APEX) fare directed towards the leisure market, which should increase the number of travellers on the route. This fare reflects a formula for similar types of leisure fare between Australia and the ASEAN countries which has already been agreed in principle by the Governments concerned.

The new APEX fare to be offered by Cathay Pacific Airways and Qantas on the routes between Hong Kong and Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane will be A5576 high season and A$484 low season. This will reduce the current lowest individual fares between Hong Kong and these cities by 42%, 37% and 35% respectively. There will also be a corresponding cheap fare for package tours.

The package also contains new first class and economy fares which will be offered by the two airlines for end to end travel between Australia and Hong Kong. The first class fare will be AX 560 and the economy fare will be A$874 - in each case for a round

trip. These also show reductions from the current levels.

Similar low fares will be introduced between Hong Kong and Perth and Hong Kong and Darwin.
