THE MERCHANT SHIPPING (METRICATION) (HONG KONG ORDER 199
PROBLEM
1. Ministerial approval is required for the submission to
the Privy Council of the attached draft Merchant Shipping (Metrication) (Hong Kong) Order 1979.
RECOMMENDATION
2. I recommend that Mr Hurd approve the draft Order. If he agrees, he should write the word "Approved" and sign his name in the space indicated at the head of the draft Order.
BACKGROUND
3. The draft Order extends to Hong Kong section 90 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1970 and the Merchant Shipping (Metrication) Regulations 1973 made under that section as it applies in the United Kingdom. The Regulations adopt certain measurement pro- visions of the Merchant Shipping Acts, dealing with the marking on ships' sides, to the metric scale.
4. The draft Order will be laid before Parliament after being
made.

The terms of the draft Order have been agreed with the Government of Hong Kong. Maritime, Aviation and Environment
Department concur.
