Re: Protest against Errection of Gas Container

at Shek Pai han as per Government Gazette dated Sep. 1, 1978.

I am one of the residents in Chi Fu Fa Yuen which is situated just above Shek Pai wan and overlooking the site, at where, as I read from the Government Gazette dated Sep. 1, 1978, a huge Town Gas Container is proposed to be errected and authorization for manufacturing and distribution may also be given by the Government as well.

In view of this, it is a must for me to write and protest against the captioned proposal due to the following reasons.

Firstly, at the neighbourhood of the proposed site, there has already situated a rather large manufacturing plant of the II.K. Electric Co. Ltd.. There are five huge funnels dispersing waste gas and polluting the air at a considerable level. If a gas container is crrected right next to it, not only the problem of air pollution is intensified, but also endangered the electricity plant, since any minor leakage may lead to disastrous accident in such a high voltage environment.

Secondly, it has already been announced that an area between Wah Fu Chuen and Victoria Road, which is also right beneath the site of Chi Pu Fa Yuen, is going to be developed into an Industrial Estate. In the other words, pollution, especially air pollution is bound to incur. So at the present moment, Chi Fu Fa Yuen & Wah Fu Chuen is being sandwiched by two pollution spots. An additional gas container nearby will endanger the health of the residents in this area.

Thirdly, I am sure that all the residents in this area are anxious to conserve the lovely scenery of the South West coast of the Island, despite the five smoking funnels. Besides, conservation of view and atmosphere of the Island has always been reinforced by the Government. We hope that there will not be any contradictory action incurred, such as érrecting a gas container to distort the pleasant scenery of the coast.

Lastly, I here would like to suggest that the gas container can be errected on Lamma Island at the site where the Electric Co. had given up to have its manufacturing plant on.
