Director of Public Works.

Co-op. Society of Fishermen Residing in H.K. 36 Kut Hing Street,

1st floor,

15th June, 1978.

Sir,

The fishermen of this co-op. society and the Shau Kei Wan District are most concerned about your Department's announcement on 5.5.78 about the proposed construction of a slipway in the Aldrich Bay Reclamation Area in Shau Kei Wan.

In a recent meeting held by the fishermen, the consensus of opinion was that reclamation carried out last year by the Hong Kong Government had already reduced the over 40-acre typhoon shelter by more than half of its area. It is therefore impossible to accomodate the some 700 fishing boats and commercial vessels in Shau Kei Wan, When typhoon signals were hoisted, the typhoon shelter and even the sailing course became extremely congestedę

If approval is granted by your department for the construction of a slipway in the Aldrich Bay typhoon shelter, the place will become even more crowded and collision may occur between the mooring fishing-boats and the ships at the slipway, thereby leading to conflicts between the fishermen. When Hong Kong is affected by typhoon, the lives and properties of fishermen will be seriously jeopardized.

All fishermen of the Shau Kei Wan District therefore object to the proposed construction of a slipway in the typhoon shelter and should be ggateful if you would respect our opinion, cancel the proposal and look for another place for constructing the slipway.

Yours faithfully,

Shopped
