respondents claimed that Government had deliberately increased the taxi fares just to pave the way for the MTR. Some respondents were anticipating an increase of fares charged at buses, ferries and trams from the present 30 cents to 50 cents. Even so, the point was made by quite a number that they would prefer to travel by these means of public transport which would still be cheaper than, and as convenient as, the Mass Transit Railway. Nonethe- less, anxiety that higher transport fares would only aggravate the ever-spiralling inflationary rate was real.
