This figure is obtained by assuming that Government would

pay half the fare in subsidy, that school children attend

school for 2/3 of the year, and that the percentage of

passengers which are students is equal to the percentage

of population made up by eligible students.

Passenger

In addition, it is assumed that 1,000,000 passengers per

day will use the MTR; that the average fare will be $1.50;

and that only 50% of students within each age group will

actually opt for MTR transport. This latter point takes

into account

(i) the adverse effect on numbers involved of the higher

fare structure;

(ii)

on a very rough basis, the consequent reduction of

bus travelling students.

It should be emphasised that these are very rough calculations.
