1. C-in-C Fleet has now produced a provisional plan for the deployment of TG 318.0, brief details of which are attached.

2. There are a number of points about the proposed programme which I should make:·

a. The timings of the visits in the Far East are tentative and can be adjusted;

The whole Group will make a single visit to China;

The whole Group is planned to visit South Korea but need not necessarily do so; and

d. The proposed visit to Vladivostock can be replaced with additional visits to Japan.

3. I shall be writing to you separately about the implications of the plan to carry out weapons training, in conjunction with the US Navy, in the Subic Operating Area.

Plans for the deployment of the current Task Group were submitted to Ministers and the Alliance in January/February of this year. We would hope to keep to the same timetable for 318.0 (ie January/February 1980) but, of course, much will depend on the early submission of the case for visiting China. No doubt the Foreign and Commonwealth Secretary will be writing to the Defence Secretary on this matter soon. Meanwhile I should be grateful for any comments you may have on other aspects of the proposed programme by 28 November at the latest.
