NEW TERRITORIES LEASES

During his meeeting with the Chinese Charge d'Affaires on 13 July, Mr Cortazzi informed Mr Chu that, following the Governor's talks with Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping during his visit to China, H M Ambassador in Peking had given Mr Song Zhiguang a more detailed explanation of the action the Governor proposed to take about land leases in the New Territories. He said that a similar explanation was being given to the NCNA in Hong Kong. Mr Cortazzi said that he thought it right that the Chinese Embassy should be informed of this, but that he felt it was best dealt with in Peking or Hong Kong. He added that the action had been taken with the knowledge and support of Ministers in London.
