ARTICLE ON HONG KONG BY GORDON LAWRIE

-Thank you for your letter of 10 September. As I explained to

your secretary on the telephone, this only reached me on

2 October as a result of some delay in transmission (not the fault of the Institute: the letter was post-marked 12 September).

Mr Lawrie's article strikes us as sensible, well-informed and balanced, though we would not necessarily agree with everything he says.

I would have thought it well worth including in "International Affairs".

There is one point of fact that I would hope could be amended if the article is to be published: on page 13, it is stated that "visas for Taiwan can be obtained at a travel agency [in Hong Kong]". This is not in fact true, though I believe that the agency does have an arrangement for issuing letters of introduction which serve much the same purpose as visas - but that is a different matter.

There is a typing error at the bottom of page 22, the last word of which should be "Commonwealth" not "colonial".

I am returning the article herewith.
