FAMILIARISATION VISIT TO HONG KONG AND PEKING

1.

In his minute to Mr Hunter of 2 October, Mr McLaren sought authority for my familiarisation visit to Hong Kong for a period of two weeks. This was given and Hong Kong have now confirmed the dates 10-23 November (Hong Kong telno 1471).

2. It is now proposed that I return from Hong Kong via Peking for a further two or three days. I should be grateful for your early authority to do this so that I may seek Peking's views and arrange a visa for China in the short time available.

HKGL and Research Department support this proposal.

Since

I shall be returning to Research Department (Far Eastern Section) at the end of my secondment to HKGL (July 1981), it has been agreed that 1 should take this opportunity to extend my familiarisation visit to include Peking.
