1. I found the brief visits which I paid to Jakarta, Manila and Hong Kong in March extremely valuable. The visit to Hong Kong was particularly rewarding, as it chanced that I was able to meet Timothy George who was down from Peking, and my trip round the Hong Kong MTR was particularly well- timed since a British consortium had just been awarded the consultancy for a similar project here. What Derek March told me about the China Light and Power coal-fired power station is also very relevant to our endeavours on Pulau Seraya and I was able to have Lawrence Kadoorie and his wife to dinner a few days ago when they passed through here.

2. Now that we are in another financial year I am proposing to use one of the two liaison visits I am allowed to round off my trips to the other ASEAN capitals by going to Bangkok. I have agreed with Rex Goring-Morris that I should go there on the evening of Wednesday, 23 May, after I have said goodbye to Sir John Llewellyn and return here on the evening of Saturday, 26 May. Dougal Reid and Hugh Davies will look after the Minister of State for Trade when he transits through here on his way to Jakarta on the morning of 26 May.

Yours over

John
