and the choice of flights to Tokyo is generally good. We will give what details are required.

14. If the CENTO Ministerial Meeting does not take place, the timing for post-China visits of course becomes less rigid, depending upon when the Secretary of State has to be back in the UK. If his last visit of the tour were to Singapore, it may be useful to know that Concorde will leave Singapore at 1130 on 19 and 21 April, arriving at Heathrow at 1405 the same day.

15. Incidentally, I have not gone into the question of using Concorde for the outward journey because it only leaves Heathrow for Singapore on 6, 9 and 11 April, which does not fit the travel schedule. If the Secretary of State flew to Singapore by a subsonic flight, a visit there and subsequently to Hong Kong would considerably curtail the period of the China visit - but this is straying beyond Conference Section's brief and if it is to be considered we will of course suggest timings.

16.

On the financial side, covering the options shown above, (apart from the last paragraph), we have the following:-

a.

Cost of using an RAF VC10 for the round trip via Washington at least £81,000.

i. Cost of an RAF VC10 for the journey up to the Secretary of State's departure for Washington and including the Far East-Brize Norton lap, (taking members of the party not required for CENTO) very approximately

£50,000

*ii. plus scheduled fares say £7,000

£57,000.

C. Scheduled fares for round trip (excluding China) plus charter costs for China journey-approximately £65,000.

d.

*i.

Scheduled fares for the round trip

£35,000

ii. diversion of British Airways flights Hong Kong-Peking and Shanghai-Hong Kong

£16,000

£51,000.

17. In making the above calculations, I am sure that you will appreciate that guess-work in some areas is unavoidable. In the estimated scheduled fare costs I have calculated on the number of the party which accompanied Mr Crosland to China

A little less if all the party returns by the Westward route.
