HONG KONG: INVITATION FROM FOREIGN CORRESPONDENTS 'CLUB

Problem

1 The Secretary of State has received an open invitation to give a luncheon address to the Foreign Correspondents Club of Hong Kong should he visit the territory in the future.

Background

2.

The Foreign Correspondents Club is a reputable organisation whose membership includes people from advertising, public relations and business in Hong Kong as well as local and visiting journalists. There is no reason in principle why Lord Carrington should not accept Mr Paul's invitation during a future visit to Hong Kong, though there would be many other demands upon the Secretary of State's time.

Recommendation

3. As the Secretary of State is not currently planning to visit Hong Kong, all that is needed is an acknowledgement. I submit a draft reply from the Private Secretary which I recommend should be forwarded through the Secretary for

Information in Hong Kong.
