Investment is expected to increase

and the Ta Kung Pao of 11 March 1979 anticipated

that over 100 investment schemes would be in

operation by the end of the year. There have also

been rumours for some time that the Ford Motor Company

were planning to set up a vehicle production plant in

Shenzhen, but these have not yet been confirmed.

Agricultural Development

The development of agriculture in Shenzhen

is not being neglected, at the expense of industry,

although most agricultural land is now being redesignated.

The Ta Kung Pao of 11 March 1979 reported that since

last May, 217 pig farms have been planned, some of which

are already in production. Travellers reported in

November last year, the establishment of two large

battery chicken farms to cater for the Hong Kong and

Macau market. The daily farming industry is also being

expanded, Rice growing is gradually been replaced by

vegetable growing, again largely for the Hong Kong

market, and more fish ponds are being excavated and

stocked for the sale of fresh water fish to Hong Kong.

Conclusion

Shenzhen is developing rapidly, in spite of

the limited manpower and resources and is being aided

by outside investment and expertise. Chinese officials

are encouraging such foreign (including Hong Kong)
