within China and internationally, and to assert China's

role as a world power.

member of the Community and Atlantic Alliance; to seek our understanding and support for China's foreign policies, particularly in relation to the Soviet Union and areas of strategic importance to China such as Indochina.

To look for ways of improving commercial and tech- nological cooperation with the UK which will benefit China's modernisation plans; and to press for further trade

concessions, particularly in the EEC context.
