CHINESE CLAIMS IN HONG KONG

LAST PATER

Attachod

Please refer to your telno_677 of 8 November to Peking. As you can imagine, ve vere slightly surprised to see Shang Wenjin's reference to confiscation of Chinese property in Hong Kong. We now believe that these claims are likely to relate to some 70 planes which were not returned to China after 1949 and also to the oil tanker 'Yung Hao' which vas salvaged and brought for repair to Hong Kong after being sunk off Taivan during the var.

2.

These two cases are dealt with in Sir Alexander Grantham's autobiography 'Via Ports' published by Hong Kong University Press in 1965. I enclose the relevant extract (pages 161 to 164).

3.

The papers on these cases in our files have now been microfilmed and it may take us some time to track down the relevant details. However, we shall try to summarize the picture from papers here and let you have an account as soon as possible. Meanwhile, as an aid to tracking down any papers which may be held in London - and which may be relevant since Us pressure on HMG seems to have been a factor in how both cases were handled you may find it useful to have our following file references:
