IMMIGRATION FROM CHINA INIO HONG KONG
9.
Although the numbers of immigrants, both legal
and illegal, have declined recently, they are still
unacceptably high. We have made clear our concern to the
Chinese Government and have sought their assistance. The
Chinese Government are sympathetic and have undertaken to take
appropriate steps to limit the rate of influx.
We shall
continue to discuss the issue with them in a spirit of
cooperation.

DUKE OF KENT'S VISIT TO CHINA
13.
His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent's visit to China
was highly successful: as the first visit by a member of the
Royal Family it had a particular significance and reflected

COMMERCIAL RELATIONS
14.
As I said in the House on the 18th of May, we are
Looking for a major expansion of our trading relationship with
China. We have an Economic Cooperation Agreement which
provides for two way trade worth about £7,000 million up to
1985. The recent session of the National People's Congress
confirmed the radjustment of China's economic plans. However
selective imports of Western technology and advanced equipment
remain central to China's modernisation plans.
