CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IN DEPENDENT TERRITORIES:

OUTSTANDING CASES

1. I attach the latest monthly report.

2.

MONTHLY REPORT ON

manslaughter for the original verdict of mesterfield Johnson case

The solicitors

The

handling the case for the Bermuda Government think there are good grounds for appeal and there is a fair chance of success. application should be ready in about two weeks' time, and if successful the appeal would be heard by the Privy Council in the Autumn. I have not, however, reinstated this case in the return since the Bermuda Attorney-General has made it plain that his concern is solely to correct what he believes to have been a mistake in legal procedure. He accepts that even if the murder verdict were restored, the death sentence would be commuted.
