pointless to establish an NSS in BAT.
SOUTH GEORGIA
19.1 One of the Falkland Islands dependencies.
Uninhabited.

The British Antarctic Survey maintain a seismic station. the Argentine claim to the Falklands extends to South Georgia, general political considerations in para 8 above also apply; South Georgia is normally reached by sea and Argentine co-operation in establishing and servicing an NSS might be unnecessary. 19.2 Monitoring capability as for BIOT. Logistically very
difficult, requiring total external support.

would need to be established to Port Stanley where a terminal

SOVEREIGN BASE AREAS, CYPRUS
20.1 If an NSS was defined as a non-military installation its presence would be a violation of the Agreement on use of the base areas. On the other hand visits by Soviet military personnel would probably require some kind of status of forces agreement. We would need to consult the Cyprus government, the Turkish Cypriots
and inform the Greek and Turkish governments.
20.2 Logistically not a difficult location.
Could be used to
monitor parts of Turkey, Greece and Middle East including Israel.

ASCENSION ISLAND
21.1 A dependency of St Helena.
21.2 Monitoring capability as for BIOT (para 15.2 above). logistically it would be easy to instal and operate an NSS. Communications are very good. The UK has had experience of operating a seismic station on the island.
