PITCAIRN ISLANDS GROUP

Pitcairn is a volcanic island of 1.75 square miles situated in the

Pacific Ocean roughly mid-way between New Zealand and Panama,

population of 61 most of whom are of Anglo-Tahitian stock and are descend-

ants of the "Bounty" mutineers. The other islands of the group

Henderson, Ducie and Oeno

are uninhabited.

The island is administered by the Governor (also British High Commissioner in Wellington) through a Commissioner in Auckland and a

Government Adviser who lives on the island. There is also an Island

Council of ten which is presided over by the Magistrate.

Pitcairn's economy is rudimentary, consisting mainly of subsistence

farming and fishing. Public revenue comes from the sale of stamps and from

investments.
