1. The Secretary of State and the Prime Minister have now agreed to the extension of Sir Murray MacLehose's appointment for a further two years. The Queen's approval has been sought and should be available (she is at Balmoral) by the end of this week.

2. I submit a draft personal telegram to the Governor on lines we discussed. I have had a word with Mr Murray, who would find it helpful if the telegram could be repeated to Singapore (where he arrives tomorrow) so that he can brief Mr Blaker, who will be in Hong Kong from 23-25 September.
