May,

Dear Robe

I have just heard of the three Governorships which have to be filled early next year. I have expressed my interest to Civil Service Branch. here but as I have been in Hong Kong only a short time and am on appointment anyway, I am not quite sure what they can say about me or how they would handle my expression of interest.

On the other hand, I assume my annual reports, etc., are still held by the Office; my last Ambassador, Oliver Wright, is well acquainted with my performance as head of post in my last job.

In anticipation of an obvious question, may I say that I am happy enough in what I am doing here in Security Branch but if there were a chance to run my own show again I would welcome it.

All I am really

If I were selected for one of these Governorships, my wife would accompany me. This is by way of background only. asking is that, being slightly in limbo, I am not overlooked when the field of candidates is being assembled. I am writing to you rather than Personnel Operations since I imagine I am now out of their hands.
