MR GEOFFREY COLIN GUY CMG CVO OBE
ANNEX I
Mr Guy was born on 4 November 1921 and educated at Chatham House School, Ramsgate, and Brasenose College, Oxford. He joined the RAF in 1941 and was commissioned in 1944, being demobilised in 1946 in the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
In 1948 he joined the staff of Courtaulds Ltd as Assistant Editor of the Works Magazine and from 1948-51 was a manage- ment trainee with Scribbans-Kemp Ltd. He joined the Colonial Service in 1951 and was sent to Sierra Leone where he served initially as an Assistant District Commissioner. From 1952- 53 he was Secretary in the Chief Commissioner's Office and from then until 1958 a District Commissioner. From 1958-65 he was Administrator of the Turks and Caicos Islands and from 1965-67 Administrator of Dominica. When this Territory attained Associated Statehood, he served as its Governor for eight months. From 1967-73 he was Secretary of the Forces Help Society and Lord Robert's Workshops. He was appointed Administrator of Ascension Island in September 1973 and Governor and Commander-in-Chief of St Helena in December 1976, which post he still holds.
Mr Guy was awarded the MBE in the New Year Honours 1957, the OBE in the Birthday Honours 1962, the CMG in the Birthday Honours 1964 and the CVO in February 1966.
He is married with one adopted son.
Mr Guy is a low-key Scot, rather shy but with considerable charm. Because of his wide range of experience with develop- ment and budgetary problems and staff management in small islands, he is able to make the St Helenians' way of life less parasitic and more self-sufficient, particularly in the sphere of natural resources. He is liked and respected by the islanders and he is fascinated by the Territory and greatly involved in its problems. His wife has always taken a very active part in the life of any post at which they have been stationed.
