1. HKGD asked me for something on Mr Wyn Jones to cover any question of a possible extension of his appointment

and on Mr Strong, for whom a possible transfer to Grand Cayman is on the cards.

2. Subject to your advice I should like to write on the following lines:

"Mr Wyn Jones who has now been in Montserrat for

2 years started well with some shrewd and witty

analyses of the social and political scene in the

Island. Since then he has not been a huge success.

He makes no secret of the fact that he dislikes the

job and associates this dislike with a number of

factors: the people whom he regards as sly, grasping

and ungenerous, the country, the house, the burden of

entertainment which however he and his wife carry out

excellently. The old Government House and the cost of

maintaining it with servants and gardeners is not

properly covered in the Island's Estimates: even with

Dev Div taking financial responsibility from now on for

replacement type maintenance of the fabric, there is

not enough money to pay adequate staff salaries and

the Wyn Jones' have to supplement this out of their
