The Dependent Territories Senior Appointments Board

is responsible for advising the Secretary of State on the

appointment of Governors and on certain other senior appoint-

ments in the Dependent Territories.

The normal practice is that the field of candidates

from HMOCS and from the Diplomatic Service is considered by the Deparbonato

agreed list is put to the Board. In drawing up this list we

try to strike a balance between the need to ensure that the

claims of members of MCCS, are adequately protected, at a time

when their promotion prospects are much diminished;

the same time taking account of the fact that many of the

senior posts in the Dependent Territories have now a greater

political than colonial contens and that Diplomatic Service

experience is becoming more important. At present six

posts are held by members of HMOCS, eight by members of the

Diplomatic Service, and one by a retired Serviceman.
