NOTE FOR THE FILE
MR WALTER WALLACE (EX-GOVERNOR, BVI)
1. Mr Wallace telephoned this morning to ask if there was any news about the deputy governorship of Bermuda. I said that there was not, but that the position should be clearer within the next week. However, it now seemed more likely that the jcb would come up in the Spring 1980 rather than the Spring of this year. Mr Wallace volunteered that he would be prepared to wait for six or eight months if he could then go to Bermuda. He did not say that he would be willing to wait for as long as a year and I did not ask.
2.
I said that we had been considering the possibility of finding Mr Wallace a temporary job in the Office. It now seemed unlikely that there would be anything suitable available, but would the idea attract him? Mr Wallace confirmed that it would. He also confirmed, in response to my question, that he would not (not) be interested in going to the New Hebrides on a short-term appointment.
3.
Mr Wallace said that he had an interview for a job with the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association on 6 February. He hoped we would be able to let him know how matters stood over the Bermuda appointment before that. I promised to do so.
