GOVERNOR OF THE FALKLANDS: DELAYED RETIREMENT

1.

I have discussed Mr Parker's letter of 15 May (below) with Mr Hall. There would seem to be advantage in taking no firm decision about Mr Parker's future until after the Minister of State (Mr Ridley) has visited the Islands as he plans to do - in July.

2. My department's recommendation would therefore be that Mr Cortazzi should send a holding reply to Mr Parker.

3. There are formidable arguments both for and against extending Mr Parker's tour and my department will be happy to deploy these if required at the appropriate time.
