PROBLEM
1. To reply to a letter from Mr Parker to Mr
Cortazzi dated 15 May, in which he offers to remain
as Governor for a further year.
RECOMMENDATION
2. I recommend that Mr Parker be thanked for his
offer but told that his appointment should end in
December 1979 as originally scheduled. POD concur.
I attach a draft letter.
ARGUMENT
3. Mr Parker tank took up the Governorship
of the Falkland Islands in December 1976. Although
his Commission does not specify a particular term,
the standard length for all Governorships except
Hong Kong (5 years) and HM Commissioner, Anguilla
(2 years) is now 3 years. Mr Parker will in any case
be 60 on 20 December 1979, the usual retirement÷
age for DS officers. As you know, the Dependent
Territories Senior Appointments Board at its meeting
on 4 June a successor to Mr Parker was selected and
