DENTAL TECHNICIANS AND DENTAL TECHNOLOGISTS
Background
7.
-
Dental Technician/Student Dental Technician (PS 17 24/ MPS 57) form a combined establishment (currently 50 + 12 supernumerary posts).
8.
Dental Technologist (IPS 25 35), a one-rank grade, has since its creation in 1962 an establishment of 2 permanent posts.
9.
The Dental Technicians and Technologists Association petitioned on 15.12.76 for -
10.
11.
12.
(a) the revision of the pay scale of Dental Technician
(b)
from PS 17 - 24 (2,290 - 3,320)
to MPS 17 35 (2,290 - 5,595);
A
the revision of the pay scale of Dental Technologist
from PS 25 35 (3,485 - 35,595)
to MPS 37 - 40 ($6,175 57,110); and
(c) the creation of more Dental Technologist posts.
Their justifications were -
(a) comparison with Physiotherapist, Radiographer and
Medical Technologist grades; and
(b)
(a)
techniques and knowledge at the Final level of the City and Guilds qualification are required to undertake the daily work of Dental Technicians, although the Intermediate level is stated for appointment in the Details of Post.
The request for pay increase is not acceptable because
comparison with Physiotherapists and Radiographers is irrelevant because of the different nature of work; and
(b) the Final City and Guilds Certificate is the
qualification appropriate to the starting pay at PS 17 (2,290).
Dental Technicians are well paid on the basis of general comparison. Entering with a "clerical" type qualification (form 5 level) on pay similar to Clerical Officers, they receive a 10 point ($1,000) jump in pay after 3 years training.
There is no shortage of recruits.
