On 7th January, 1977, following a period of investigation and surveillance, Preventive Service Officers intercepted a Chinese male Yu Hoi-ching (0151/7030/4394) in the Hung Hom area of Kowloon. A bag he was carrying was found to contain 1.7408 kilogrammes of mixture containing 0.4808 kilogramme of salts of esters of morphine. Yu was arrested.

Following investigation the officers conducted a raid at a farm at Wu Kai Sha in the New Territories which resulted in the seizure of a small quantity of No. 3 heroin, a heroin pipe and 0.128 kilogramme of heroin pills. The owner of the farm Yu Cheuk-kwan (0151/0587/0971) and his son Yu Yuen (0151/3293) were arrested.

A follow-up raid was finally conducted on Yu Hoi-ching's former residence in Kowloon. This resulted in the seizure of a further 0.0458 kilogramme of No. 3 heroin and a quantity of Part I
Poisons.
38. Yu Hoi-ching was charged with two counts of Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking and Possession an Instrument Fit and Intended for Smoking Dangerous Drugs. He was convicted on all three counts and sentenced to 4 years, 2 years and 6 months imprisonment respectively, all sentences to run concurrently.
39. Yu Cheuk-kwan was charged with (a) Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking, and (b) Possession of Dangerous Drugs. He was sentenced to 18 months pro- bation on each charge to run concurrently.
40. Yu Yuen was charged with (a) Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking, and (b) Possession of an Instrument Fit and Intended for Smoking Dangerous Drugs. He was found not guilty on both counts.

On 23rd February, 1977, acting on information, Narcotics Bureau Officers arrested a business man and a Preventive Service Officer in Queen's Road, Western, when they were seen handling a bag containing 1.38 kilogrammes of No. 3 heroin. Both arrested persons were charged with Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking. However, at their trial both were acquitted, the trial judge not being satisfied that the 'chain of custody' had been maintained in respect of the exhibits produced at the trial.
