REGISTRY, [Action Taken

QLE

1. We spoke about this case which formed the subject of Mr Duncan's submission of 23 May.

2.

You will see from Mr Wall's minute of 30 May that the Secretary of State has agreed with Mr Luard's suggestion that we should ask the Hong Kong Government to provide us with all available information in their possession on Miss Nightingale and that we should then decide whether to transmit any to Miss Nightingale's lawyers.

3. I should be grateful if you could say who we should approach in Hong Kong for this information. We could indicate that it was requested on behalf of the Secretary of State. Perhaps HUGD will wish to approach Hong Kong in this matter.

4. We already have some information about Hong Kong's activities as far as Miss Nightingale is concerned which are mentioned in Mr Turtell's minute of 31 May 1978 below.

5.

It goes without saying, of course, that any information we obtain from the Hong Kong authorities would be of a very delicate nature and would need to be adequately safeguarded. It might be advisable, given the possibility of some infor- · mation being passed to the defence lawyers, for the Hong Kong authorities to be given the chance of indicating that which must not be released in any circumstances, eg names of informers etc.
