During a routine search of the m.v. 'SIMANI', which had arrived on 25th August, 1977, from Sarawak, Customs and Excise Officers discovered 11.616 kilogrammes of prepared opium hidden in bilge water in the engine room underdecking. A Malaysian wireman, WONG Yii-ling (7806/4135/7127) was arrested and charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking', and was subsequently sentenced to 2 years imprisonment.

(CE/110/151/77) 21 On 28th July, 1977, a Malaysian Male Ho Seng-huat, (0149/2494/6540) arriving at Hong Kong Airport from Penang was arrested by Customs and Excise Officers when 4.9902 kilogrammes of prepared opium were found concealed around his waist in a body pack. He was charged with 'Posses- sion of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking' and received a sentence of 31⁄2 years imprisonment.

22 On 30th August, 1977, Customs and Excise Officers arrested Pakistani male Mohammed FAYAZ as he arrived at Hong Kong Airport from Karachi. 3.849 kilogrammes of raw opium were found concealed in the false bottom of his suitcase. He was charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking' and received a two year prison sentence. (CE/109/71/77) 23 On 27th September, 1977, acting upon information, Customs and Excise Officers arrested a Chinese male LAM Cheung-lai (2651/7022/0171) as he returned to Hong Kong from Penang. A total of 2.6877 kilogrammes of prepared opium were found concealed inside three shrimp cracker boxes fastened around his legs. He was charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking'. Lam pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to 24 years imprisonment. (CE/109/81/77)

24 On 29th September, 1977, Customs and Excise routine examination of an air cargo package, declared as personal effects, resulted in the seizure of 9.302 kilogrammes of prepared opium. The drugs were concealed inside plaster statues of unicorns and had arrived in Hong Kong from Bankgok. No arrest was made

25 On 9th October, 1977, a Thai/Chinese male LIM Liang-ging (2651/5328/6855) arrived at Hong Kong Airport from Bangkok. Routine examination of his travelling bag revealed 3.5531 kilogrammes of No. 3 heroin concealed in the lining. LIM was charged with 'Possession of Dangerous Drugs for the Purpose of Unlawful Trafficking'. Trial is pending.
