5. Mrs Castle said that she hoped to obtain on 16 August a letter from Miss Nightingale's mother urging her daughter not to agree to her nomination as a candidate for election to

Parliament. She asked whether this could be transmitted

urgently to Miss Nightingale by FCO channels. Dr Oven agreed to do so and it was arranged that, in his absence, Mrs Castle would, in the first instance, telephone the text of the letter to Lord Goronwy Roberts.
