On 7 January 1978, acting upon a tip-off from Hong Kong Customs and Excise, Macau Police followed two persons collecting a parcel from Macau Post office. The two were subsequently arrested, and the parcel was found to contain 84 lbs of prepared opium. This represents the largest seizure of drugs in Macau for thirty years.

2 On 11 January 1978, as a result of a protracted investigation into a heroin distribution syndicate in Kowloon, a joint operation was mounted by Narcotics Bureau and Kowloon district vice squads. A total of thirty two synchronised raids were mounted against known addresses of the syndicate in Kowloon and the New Territories. A total of nineteen persons were detained, of whom ten were later charged with offences under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance. A total of over 0.4 kilos of No 3 heroin was seized from varying locations. A quantity of equipment suitable for the purpose of manu- facturing heroin was also seized. Arrested persons were sentenced up to a maximum of fifteen months imprisonment and the organization has been neutralized since the raids.
