During the early hours of the morning of 18 April 1978, Narcotics Bureau officers raided a residential flat at 25, Man Yiu Building, 16 floor, Ferry Point, Yau Ma Tei. The raid was the culmination of a protracted investigation into a syndicate manufacturing heroin. Inside the premises a large quantity of equipment used in the manufacture of heroin was discovered along with five occupants of the flat. Persons arrested in the premises comprised four Chinese males of Chiu Chow origin. They are Fu Chun-shum (0265/2182/1218), NG Man-ying (0702/2429/5391), CHUNG Cheng-bor (6945/7022/3134) and Au YEUNG Sai-piu (2962/7122/0013/2871). The fifth person being a Thai female, CHUNG Fong-mui (6774/7364/1188). All five persons were subsequently charged with 'Manufacturing a Dangerous Drug'. Analysis by the Government chemist revealed a total of 4.63 kilos of esters of morphine and 4.06 kilos of morphine. As a result of this raid, follow up searches of the homes of the defendants led to the discovery of 12.2 litres of acetic anhydride and a large quantity of caffeine. All defendants were committed on 27 June to stand trial in the Supreme Court.
