Hong Kong (Narcotics)

Mr. Pavitt asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if the Hong Kong Government have re- quested any assistance from the British medical profession and the Medical Re- search Council in the work of the Hong Kong action committee against narcotics.

Mr. Luard: No specific request for help has been made either to the Medical Research Council or to the British medi- cal profession generally. The Govern- ment fully support the efforts being made in Hong Kong to combat drug abuse and to treat and rehabilitate addicts. These efforts are producing encouraging results.

Diplomatic Service

Miss Harvie Anderson asked the Sec- retary of State for Foreign and Com- monwealth Affairs how many posts there are in the Diplomatic Service in grade 1 or drawing a higher salary than a grade 1 post apart from allowances: how many posts there are at a level intermediate be- tween grade 1 and grade 2; and how many of these are based at home and how many overseas.

Mr. Luard: There are at present 15 posts in the Diplomatic Service in grade 1. Two of these are based in London, 13

overseas.

There is one post with a salary level intermediate between grade 1 and grade 2. This is home based.

General Agosti (Visit)

Mr. Newens asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what arrangements have been made for official talks and contacts with representatives of Her Majesty's Gov- ernment for General Agosti, a member of the Argentinian junta, during his forth- coming visit to London; and if an oppor- tunity is to be provided to discuss the possibility of arms sales.

Written Answers International Anti-Apartheid Year Mr. Ryman asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what support the Government are giving to the work of the Co-ordinating Com- mittee for International Anti-Apartheid Year.

Mr. Luard: The Government have agreed to contribute £11,400 to the work of the Co-ordinating Committee for International Anti-Apartheid Year to enable the committee to carry out its pro- gramme of activities for the year.

India and Pakistan

(Immigration Applications)

Mr. Ovenden asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many wives, children and fiancés of British residents were inter- viewed in the past 12 months at the United Kingdom High Commission in New Delhi, in connection with applica- tions to enter the United Kingdom; and how these figures compare with the pre- vious two years.

Mr. Luard: The number of wives, children and fiancés seeking immediate or eventual settlement interviewed during the last three years was as follows:

Small Firms (Loan Guarantees)

Mr. Kenneth Clarke asked the Secre- tary of State for Industry what proposals the Government have for the introduc- tion of a loan guarantee scheme for small firms.

Mr. Grylls asked the Secretary of State for Industry whether he will introduce proposals, along the lines recommended by the Roll Committee, to provide loan guarantees for small businesses.
