Rick, Jean and Jackie were born in different parts of the world and had no connection with one another. Rick left Dartmouth College in New Hampshire to work for Trinity, the first charismatic magazine. Jean lived in California and was the editor and originator of that magazine. Jackie graduated from the Royal College of Music in London still remembering her childhood desire to be a missionary.
Rick married Jean. Jean and Jackie both had dreams calling them to the Far East as missionaries.
Jackie left England for Hong Kong October 2, 1966. Rick and Jean left Los Angeles for Hong Kong October 2, 1967 on their way to Indonesia. Jackie taught music and was doing voluntary work in the Walled City and in resettlement estates. Rick and Jean returned to Hong Kong in June of 1968 after having shared the Good News in Indonesia and Taiwan. They began a prayer group in Hong Kong which Jackie attended.
The prayer group grew and began to publish literature. Rick, Jean, Martha Baker (the Anglican Bishop's daughter), Gail Castle (a friend who came from California to help), and Stuart Gill (a prefect at KGV school) met together and formed the Society of Stephen. The prayer group which had sent Rick and Jean was now meeting at the Duncan's home in California. A tax free organization through which to send money to the Willans was needed. So the Society of Stephen became official, was recognized as a Church by the State and Federal Government in the U. S. A., and was later registered in the Brit- ish Crown Colony of Hong Kong.
