No. 4 Heroin - Recipe for 4 lbs. Procedure prior to crystallisation:

Break the raw material (morphine) into approximately half-inch cubes. Steam dry dry it over a steam bath for about two hours, watch- ing the strength of the fire carefully. Heat until the morphine turns white.
Dissolve by means of acetylation- add 4-6 lbs of Acetic Anhydride to the raw materials, seal the bucket with wet towels, then place it on a stove. Heat over a gentle fire for about two hours until all the raw material is dissolved. Take extra care to ensure it does not boil over. Removal of Impurities-First add about one third of cold water, then 2 lbs of chloroform. Wait for 20 minutes.
Filtration-Put filter paper in a funnel, add 3 spoonfuls of bone charcoal. Flush with water to make the charcoal stick evenly on the paper. Then throw away all the water in the Buchner flask. Pour the raw material into the funnel and pump it. Clean the funnel with water.
Preparing Alkaline Solution-Pre- pare beforehand 8 lbs of American ICI soda powder, boil in water and
filter ready for use.
Granulation-run alkaline solution slowly into raw material making it form granules, until there is no foaming.
Water washing-First pump1 out all the alkaline solution, then wash with cold fresh water and then with boiling water 2 or 3 times. Pump out the water.
Drying-dry it over a steam bath for about 2 to 3 hours and then sieve it until it becomes a fine powder.
Attention, keep it away from water and fire from then on.

Dissolve and solidify-add in the raw material to 3 mugs of 96% ethyl-alcohol, heat it until it dis- solves. Pour it into a wash basin to let it cool off and solidify. Dry-pump until it is dry. Dissolve-add 5 or 6 mugs of ethyl
alcohol in preparation for adding hydrochloric acid. Formula for adding hydrochloric acid:

** First, add 60% B.P. Hydro- chloric acid, then heat it over a stove until it dissolves com- pletely. Second, use approximately 84-95 c.c. of hydrochloric acid per lb. Test using the mirror test2 or litmus paper test. (The mirror should be blue in colour while the litmus paper should be like match phos- phorescent colour). Filtration-use bone charcoal filtration method.
Crystallisation-First add 15 lbs of propyl-alcohol in 5-8 mugs then American ether. First add 2-3 mugs of ether and a few minutes when flashing like golden stars is seen, add more ether slowly. Mean- while stir evenly with a bamboo spatula until the crystals are com- pletely formed. (Add faster if it forms quickly, slow down if it forms slowly).
Drying-after pumping out all the water, put it on a lime box and heat for about 24 hours until it is completely dry. This is the finished product.
No. 3 Heroin - Recipe using 16 ounces of morphine to produce 26 ounces of No. 3 Heroin

Heroin base formation formula
Proceed according to the process for No. 4 Heroin. After granulation there is no need to dry.

Put the base into a basin and add hydrochloric acid. Test its clearness with а mirror2. When testing the colour it should be red to blue. Add approximately 96-98 c.c. per lb.
Add 100 c.c. of fresh water. Heat over a stove and add additives until it is almost dry. Then dry it completely over a steam bath.

Use a 6-8 hole sieve to obtain granules. Remove powder. Granules are the finished product.

2. The mirror test refers to a method of testing for the amount of hydro- chloric acid to be added. Heroin base (Diacetylmorphine) is in- soluble but the salt (Diacetyl- morphine Hydrochloride) soluble. If when placed on a mirror a drop of the liquid is cloudy, some heroin base is still in suspension. Hydrochloric acid should be added until the liquid is clear.
