CHARACTER SKETCH

Throughout his reports Gleave is described as well mannered, well turned-out, intelligent with abundant common sense and initiative.

He is

a very able staff officer, despite lack of formal training, and he combines firmness of decision with tact. In personnel administration he was caid to have a good brain and a balanced outlook, seeing a problem in breadth and depth.

In his tour as OC 50 Command Workshop, he commanded 450 all ranks with a predominance of civilians. He was responsible for the internal security, local defence and camp administration of the five minor units in Shamshuipo Camp in addition to his technical duties. He was particularly commended for establishing and maintaining very good relationships with neighbouring OCs end for taking particular care to get to know and gain the confidence of his military and civilian subordinates.

As a REME officer, he is not very technically inclined and had difficulty in obtaining his formal qualifications. His strength appears to lie in his ability to get on well with people in all his tours and good practicable administration.
