1. I was telephoned at home at 9 pm on 2 October by the Resident Clerk who had learnt of the death of a

Superintendent of Police in Hong Kong. The information had come from relatives of the deceased who had been told by the Hong Kong Government Office and was seeking more details. I agreed with the Resident Clerk that it would be appropriate for a telegram to be sent asking for those details.

2. The next morning a reply from Hong Kong came in and virtually simultaneously I was telephoned by Major-General Norman Foster, a cousin of the deceased, acting on behalf of his nearest relative, his sister. General Foster (telephone number Office 273-5216, Home 0252-23540) informed me that the deceased's sister intended flying out to Hong Kong for the funeral and to help Mrs White, the widow (Mrs White is Chinese and has two children). I agreed to send a telegram to Hong Kong informing them of the sister's arrival and asking them to offer all possible help. I also spoke to Superintendent Allan at the Hong Kong Government Office to find out whether there was anything more that could be done and in particular whether the Hong Kong Government would, in such circumstances, pay the sister's fare to Hong Kong. Superintendent Allen informed me that there was provision for partial or total reimburse- ment of the fare depending upon the circumstances of the persons concerned. Any application for reimbursement would have to be made to the Force Welfare Officer in Hong Kong. I have passed this on to General Foster.
