1. Robin McLaren wrote to you on 15 December to bring you up-to- date on events arising from the visit to the UK of the delegation representing the police officers dismissed under CR55.
2. You will recall that the delegation said that they had come to Britain to petition The Queen: this they duly did last week, and the Palace have now referred the petition to us, for the Secretary of State's formal recommendation on the reply to be sent. In making his recommendation, the Secretary of State is, of course, required to seek a report from the Governor. I enclose the original of the petition and would be grateful for your formal advice on the reply that should be sent: I assume in fact that you will wish us to recommend that the reply should be the normal one where a petition is rejected, to the effect that "the petition has been laid before Her Majesty but the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs was unable to advise that the petition should be granted". I should be grateful if you could return the petition with your reply.
3.
The delegation have appointed a firm of London solicitors to represent them here, to whom they have asked that the reply to their petition should be addressed. I attach a copy of the letter that I have sent to the solicitors, acknowledging receipt of the petition.
