The engineering works for Package 4 of Cheung Chau Development will provide a public housing estate for 3,000 persons as well as sites for village type housing and a Government market. These works will be implemented in two stages. The first stage of Cheung Chau Development is in Category A of the Public Works Programme and is due to commence in November 1978. It will involve a reclamation of 4 hectares of land off the western coast of Cheung Chau Island and to the south of the existing ferry pier of which 0, 4 hectares will be used for the construction of a Government market, 1.5 hectares for village type housing development and the remainder for pedestrian-ways and open space. The proposed reclamation was authorised under section 3 (3) of the Public Reclama- tions and Works Ordinance (Chapter 113) on 1st September 1978.

Proposal

2

As the reclamation works will affect certain private land along the existing sea frontage, the Director of Public Works has recommended the acquisition of 1, 379 m2 (14, 844 square feet) of private agricultural land and 216 m2 (2,326 square feet) of private building land at this location. The general location of the land to be resumed is shown coloured orange on the Identification Plan at Annex A. The Secretary for the New Territories is satisfied that the area of the land to be resumed is the minimum necessary to implement the project. Compensation for resumption and clearance is estimated at $326,000 and funds are available in the approved project estimate to meet this commitment.

3

Compensation for miscellaneous items (accommodation works) including a retaining wall is necessary and one temporary structure used for domestic purposes and occupied by a family will be cleared. The family if found eligible by the Director of Housing will be offered public housing elsewhere or may opt for a resite
