And he explained that, in order to ensure that this

area should make the best possible contribution to

recreation and to the amenity of Central and Wanchai

districts, the Government had decided to engage

consultants to advise on its use for recreational

and leisure activities.

The scheme for the Barracks also includes

the straightening of two bends in Kennedy Road.

Commenting on the announcement, the

Secretary for the Environment, Mr. Derek Jones,

expressed the Government's appreciation of the

valuable contribution made by the Victoria Barracks

Planning Committee, many of whose ideas, he said,

had been embodied in the final plan. The Planning

Committee's final report will be published for

public information shortly, together with the

proposals prepared by the UMELCO Ad Hoc Group, which

illustrate the different approaches taken to the

planning of this important area.
