DRAFT PRESS RELEASE

DECISION MADE ON FUTURE

USE OF VICTORIA BARRACKS

After several months of considering the

views of various groups, the Government has finally

decided how to develop Victoria Barracks after the

site is handed back by the Army next March as part

of the Defence Costs Agreement.

A Government spokesman said today (

that the western half of the Barracks will be developed

for recreational and leisure activities while the

eastern half will be sold for private residential and

commercial development.

The spokesman said that the Barracks

occupies a total area of 16.8 hectares of which

9.72 hectares (or about 58%) will be used for

recreational purposes and leisure activities.

He said plans had been prepared by the

Victoria Barracks Planning Committee and by the

Public Works Department, both of which had received

a great deal of consideration by the UMELCO Ad Hoc

Group set up to study future plans for the area as

well as by the Government.
