The New Territories, with the exception of Tsuen Wan, was not included in the 1964 Squatter Control Survey and therefore it is not possible to say to what extent the squatter population changed between 1964 and 1976.

Discussions have been recently held between the New Territories Administration and Housing Department, and it has been agreed that squatter control in the New Territories should be handed over to the Housing Department in stages : it is planned that squatter control in the two New Town Districts, Sha Tin and Tuen Mun should become Housing Department's responsibility from 1st April 1979, with the other districts following later.
