BACKGROUND NOTE
HONG KONG IMMIGRATION REGULATIONS FOR UK CITIZENS
1. United Kingdom citizens do not require visas to enter Hong Kong:
a) if they hold a United Kingdom passport issued in the United Kingdom or the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man, provided that the document was not issued on behalf of some
other territory; or
b) if they were born, naturalized, or registered as United Kingdom citizens, or adopted, in the United Kingdom and
have not renounced British nationality.
2. However, except in the case of those who are classified in
Hong Kong as "Resident UK Belongers" (that is, UK citizens or their families who have been normally resident in Hong Kong for seven years), UK citizens may on arrival be required to satisfy the immigration officer that they have sufficient means of support for their stay in Hong Kong. They should also hold return or onward tickets (unless in transit to China or Macao), or have evidence of definite employment in Hong Kong. UK citizens in the categories in paragraph 1 above are normally allowed to stay for six months in the first instance, but extensions of stay are
granted liberally.
3. Other categories of UK citizens require visas if they wish to work, study, join in any business, or establish permanent
residence in Hong Kong, but they may otherwise enter for up to
three months without a visa. For longer visits, visas are required. All visitors, whether with or without visas, are required to have sufficient funds to cover the duration of their stay.
