During October 1978, 1,481 illegal immigrants were arrested compared with 987 last month. This is the highest arrest figure since repatriation commenced on 30 November 1974.

Of these 1,481 arrested, 835 were land crossers, 379 bay crossers and 267 sea crossers. Most of them were between 16- 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. Consequently 1,402 were repatriated during the month, 2 were allowed to stay, and the remaining 77 were awaiting a decision. In addition, of the remaining 13 illegal immigrants arrested in September, 1 was allowed to stay and 12 were repatriated to China in October. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 128 on 27 October.

3 local residents were prosecuted for aiding and abetting 2 illegal immigrants from China. 1 was sentenced to 6 months imprisonment, suspended for 2 years, 1 was discharged and the remaining one was sentenced to a fine of $1,000 plus 8 months imprisonment, suspended for 2 years.

2 speedboats which were used in the commission of aiding and abetting 7 illegal immigrants from China were seized by the Police on 19 and 26 October 1978 respectively. Applications for forfeiture of the boats are under process.

91 i i 36 bodies, believed to be those if illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month. (1 in the eastern sector, 28 in the western sector and 7 in the northern sector).

The cumulative total of illegal immigrants arrested by or surrendered to the Police and the Army since 1 January 1968 is now 36,724. The yearly totals are as follows:-
