We have now had the NCNA reply. When Tan Kan came to see Iain Orr to discuss a number of other matters on 11 August, he read from a piece of paper the following:

The relevant authorities in Canton have made an investigation into a shooting incident which occurred on 10 July. The result of the investigation shows that warning shots were fired in the vicinity of the Shum Chun River estuary to stop unauthorised persons crossing the river. NO one was hurt during the incident. Those in pursuit did not land anywhere on the south side of the Shum Chun River. However, the relevant authorities in Kwangtung deemed that the incident merits close attention and have taken corresponding steps.

Iain Orr said that he was pleased to hear that an investigation had been carried out, although there seemed to be some obvious discrepancies between our own information on the incident and that which Mr Tan had passed over. Our information showed quite clearly that there had been a landing on our side of the river and that two people, who had been hit by shots, were removed to a boat. Mr Tan, however, said that he had no further information and only added, with some embarrassment, that he was sure a thorough investigation had been carried out.
